Oxidation explained

Time takes its toll - sun, salt and sea water will oxidize gel coat, stealing the shine and leaving a rough, dull surface. The question is, why does this happen? It's simply that Gel-coat suffers from oxidation.

Now, oxidation and UV damage are not the same thing. They don't have the same effect on a boat's finish and it's important to know the differences between them.

Oxidation, caused by exposure to oxygen, results in the chalking you see on the palm of your hand when you touch an unprotected boat. This process is slowed by good maintenance and this means regular waxing, protecting the gel coat from the elements. UV damage is increased if you don't maintain the shine of your gel coat. Shiny surfaces reflect UV rays better than dull surfaces and UV rays not only cause discolorations but can mechanically degrade the Gel coat.

While oxidation only affects the surface, UV damage penetrates the full thickness of the gel coat and can even damage the fiberglass beneath it. So, keeping oxidation under control will also keep UV damage at bay. However, despite your best efforts, you will, eventually, find yourself losing the shine. Surfaces may look dull and tired and also feel rough to the touch.  To prevent the degradation of gel coat it is best to maintain your gel coat. this entails compounding, polishing and waxing.

Antifouling explained

What is the purpose of antifouling?

What is anti fouling paint? Anti foul is also known as bottom paint or anti fouling bottom paint. it is used to keep away the unwanted growth of things like slime, weed, barnacles and other creatures that love to grow under your boat and slow it down or eat it away. The way it works is by using a biocide, which means 'life-destroying'.

What happens if you don't Anti foul a boat?

By not anti fouling your boat, the layer of slime can develop and lead to marine growth, which can increase the fuel consumption, affect your top speed, make the boat hard to maneuver, and overall degrade the exterior and the aesthetic of your vessel.

polishing explained

Should you polish your boat?

Polishing your boat is the most effective thing that you can do to maintain its glossy shine. This will help to keep your boat looking newer for longer. Polishing your boat is not what most people think it is. The polish used on boats is actually abrasive and is used to remove the pitted surface.

It will remove any light scratches and chalk marks while also protecting against fading caused by UV rays. The end result is a high-gloss finish.
